Right-size every image
Resizing down averages neighbouring pixels together, which is why a smaller copy looks softer than a crop of the same size. Resizing up invents nothing: it stretches what is there, and text or fine lines come back blurred rather than sharper.
The aspect-ratio lock exists because the alternative is silent distortion. With it off you can enter any pair of numbers and the image will be squeezed to fit them, which is occasionally what you want and usually a mistake noticed later.
One image at a time, up to 25 MB, 16,384 pixels on a side and 40 megapixels in total. For a set of images that all need the same width, this is the wrong shape of tool — it processes one file and asks for exact numbers each time.
Frequently asked questions about Image Resizer
Will enlarging an image make it sharper?
No. Enlarging invents pixels that were never captured, so the result looks softer than the original. Resizing down is the operation that keeps detail.
What if I need dimensions that change the proportions?
Unlock the aspect ratio and set both numbers. The image will stretch, which is occasionally what you want and usually not.
Is the original file modified?
No. A new file is created and the original stays on your device untouched, so you can resize the same image several times.
