How to use Image Cropper

  1. Choose an image and wait for the preview to appear.
  2. Drag the selection to move it, or use the handles to resize it. Arrow keys nudge by a pixel, Shift by ten.
  3. Confirm the crop dimensions shown below the preview, then download.

Keep only the useful frame

A crop removes pixels rather than scaling them, so the part you keep is exactly as sharp as it was in the source. That is the difference between cropping to a size and resizing to it, and the reason a crop is the better move when the subject is smaller than the frame.

The selection is stored as four numbers — offset and size in pixels — and the editor keeps them inside the image, so a rectangle cannot be dragged past an edge and produce a transparent margin. Typing the numbers directly is there for when a layout specifies them.

The aspect presets constrain the selection rather than the output. Choosing 16:9 gives a 16:9 region of the original pixels; it does not scale that region to any particular width, which is what the resizer is for.

Frequently asked questions about Image Cropper

Can I crop to a fixed ratio?

Yes. Choose a ratio such as 1:1 or 16:9 and the selection keeps it while you drag; choose Free to select any rectangle.

Can I crop without a mouse?

Yes. The selection is focusable: arrow keys move it by one pixel, Shift and an arrow key move it by ten, and the handles are reachable by keyboard.

Does cropping re-compress the image?

Yes. The cropped area is drawn onto a new canvas and encoded again, so a JPG loses a little quality. A PNG stays lossless.
