How to use JPG, PNG and WEBP Converter

  1. Choose one JPG, PNG, or WEBP image to convert.
  2. Pick the output format, and set the quality for JPG or WEBP.
  3. Compare the resulting size with the original, then download it.

Choose the format deliberately

The three formats disagree about what to preserve. PNG keeps every pixel and every level of transparency and pays in bytes. JPG has no transparency at all and is the best of the three at photographs. WEBP does both, and is the one some older software still cannot open.

Converting to JPG is where a surprise lives: transparent pixels have to become something, and they become white. A logo with a soft shadow on a transparent background will arrive with a white rectangle around it, which is visible the moment it is placed on any other colour.

The quality setting only applies to JPG and WEBP. Choosing PNG ignores it entirely, because there is no quality to trade — the file is as large as the pixels require.

Frequently asked questions about JPG, PNG and WEBP Converter

Which format should I choose?

PNG for anything with transparency or sharp edges such as screenshots and logos. JPG or WEBP for photographs, where the quality setting buys a much smaller file.

What happens to transparency when I convert to JPG?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. Convert to PNG or WEBP if you need to keep them.

Does converting PNG to PNG make the file smaller?

Rarely. PNG is lossless, so re-encoding mostly rewrites the same pixels. Use the image compressor if size is the goal.
