STEP BY STEP

How to use UUID v4 Generator

  1. Choose how many UUID v4 values to create, from one to one hundred.
  2. Generate a fresh batch using the browser's cryptographic random source.
  3. Copy an individual UUID or the complete newline-separated list.

Independent random identifiers

A version 4 UUID is 122 random bits with six bits spent on saying which version it is. Nothing coordinates them, which is the whole point: two machines that have never met can each mint one and the chance of a clash is small enough to design around.

Small enough is not zero, and it is also not a guarantee about the source. These come from the browser's cryptographic random generator, so they are unpredictable as well as unique — that matters if an identifier ever ends up in a URL somebody could otherwise guess their way along.

What they are not is orderly. Random values scatter across an index, so a table keyed on them writes in random places and sorts in no useful order. If rows need to sort by creation time, that is what version 7 is for, and this generator does not make those.

Frequently asked questions about UUID v4 Generator

Which UUID version does this generator create?

It creates version 4 UUIDs with the required version and variant bits and random data from the browser cryptography API.

Are generated UUIDs guaranteed to be unique?

No finite random identifier can provide an absolute guarantee, but correctly generated UUID v4 collisions are extraordinarily unlikely.

Are generated identifiers stored or transmitted?

No. UUIDs are generated in the current browser tab and remain there unless you choose to copy them elsewhere.
