How to use Character Counter

  1. Type, paste, or insert example text up to 250,000 characters.
  2. Read all six Unicode-aware statistics as they update.
  3. Copy, edit, or clear the text without leaving the page.

Useful writing statistics

A character is not a byte and not always what a keystroke produced. A flag emoji is two code points, a family emoji can be seven, and an accented letter may be one code point or two depending on how the text was typed. The count here follows what a reader sees on screen.

That is usually the number a submission form or a meta description limit is really asking about, but not always: a database column measured in bytes will fit fewer characters than this reports, and a platform counting code units will disagree about emoji.

Reading time is an estimate at a fixed words-per-minute pace, which is a reasonable planning figure for prose and a poor one for anything a reader stops to study. Code, tables and reference material take longer than the number suggests.

Frequently asked questions about Character Counter

Are spaces counted?

Both totals are shown: grapheme characters and characters without whitespace.

How is reading time estimated?

The estimate uses 200 words per minute, rounds up for non-empty text, and shows zero when empty.

Does the text leave my device?

No. Every statistic is calculated locally with the browser's Unicode segmenter.
