Predictable web addresses
A slug has to survive being typed, copied into a message, printed and read aloud, which is why it comes out as lowercase letters, digits and single hyphens and nothing else. Accents are stripped to their base letters, punctuation is dropped, and runs of separators collapse to one.
The alphabet is the boundary. Latin text with diacritics converts cleanly, and Cyrillic, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Arabic have no base letters to strip to — those return an empty slug rather than a transliteration nobody agreed on. Write the slug for those languages by hand.
Polish is handled specifically. Most diacritics reduce to their base letter under Unicode normalization, but the crossed l does not decompose at all, so it is mapped deliberately; without that, every word containing one would lose a letter instead of keeping it.
Frequently asked questions about Slug Generator
What happens to accented letters?
They lose their accent and keep their base letter, so "ą" becomes "a" and "ł" becomes "l". The result stays readable to someone who does not type Polish.
Which characters are removed?
Everything that is not a lowercase Latin letter or a digit becomes a hyphen, and repeated hyphens collapse into one. Leading and trailing hyphens are trimmed.
Does it work for Cyrillic, Greek, or Chinese text?
No. Those scripts have no accent to strip, so they are removed entirely and you get an empty slug. Transliterate the title yourself first.
