How to use Line Sorter and Deduplicator

  1. Paste your list, one entry per line.
  2. Choose sorting, removing duplicates, or both at once.
  3. Read the result and copy it back where you need it.

Clean lists without a spreadsheet

Sorting is natural rather than alphabetical, which means item 2 comes before item 10 instead of after it. Plain alphabetical sorting compares digits as characters, and that is why file listings so often run 1, 10, 11, 2 — the order a computer defends and nobody wants.

Duplicate removal keeps the first occurrence and drops the rest, so the surviving line is the one whose surrounding order you already chose. Lines have to match exactly to count as duplicates: a trailing space or a different capitalization makes two entries, because guessing otherwise would silently merge things that differ on purpose.

Windows and Unix line endings are both accepted, and whichever the input used is what the output uses. That matters when the text is going back into a file somebody else's tool will read.

Frequently asked questions about Line Sorter and Deduplicator

How does the sort handle numbers inside text?

Naturally: "Banana 2" comes before "Banana 10" rather than after it, because digit runs are compared as numbers instead of character by character.

Does removing duplicates ignore case and accents?

Sorting ignores both, but duplicate removal does not: two lines have to match exactly to be treated as one, so "Apple" and "apple" both stay.

Are empty lines removed?

No. An empty line is treated as an entry, so a list with a blank line between sections keeps one of them after deduplication.
