How to use JSON/YAML Converter

  1. Paste JSON or YAML into the editor, or start from the example.
  2. Choose the direction; the result appears as you type.
  3. Check the output for the types you expected, then copy it.

Two readable data formats

YAML is a superset of JSON, which means every JSON document is already valid YAML and the conversion in that direction is mostly a change of punctuation. The other direction is where the interesting losses are, because YAML can express things JSON has no syntax for.

Comments are the loss you will notice. A YAML configuration file is often half explanation, and none of it survives a trip through JSON — JSON has no comment syntax to put it back into. Convert a copy, not the file you maintain.

Anchors and aliases are the other one. YAML can define a block once and reference it in three places; JSON expands each reference into its own copy, so the result is correct, larger, and no longer has a single place to edit.

Frequently asked questions about JSON/YAML Converter

Are numbers, booleans, and nulls preserved?

Yes. Both directions go through a real parser, so 42 stays a number and true stays a boolean rather than becoming a quoted string.

What happens to comments in my YAML?

They are dropped. JSON has no way to represent a comment, so a round trip through JSON cannot bring them back.

Can it handle YAML anchors and multiple documents?

Anchors are resolved into the values they point at. A file containing several documents separated by --- is not supported; convert one document at a time.
