How to use Hash Generator

  1. Choose a SHA algorithm and enter up to one million characters of text.
  2. Generate the digest locally with the browser cryptography API.
  3. Copy the lowercase hexadecimal or Base64 representation.

Deterministic fingerprints for text

A hash is one-way by construction. The same UTF-8 text and the same algorithm always produce the same digest, and there is no operation that turns a digest back into the text — which is what makes it useful for comparing two things without storing either of them.

One-way is not the same as unguessable. A short digest of a common word can be looked up in a table someone else already built, so a hash on its own is a fingerprint, not a secret. Passwords need a purpose-built function with a salt and a deliberate cost, not SHA.

SHA-1 is here for reading old records and nothing else. Collisions have been produced in practice, meaning two different inputs with the same digest, so it can still confirm that a file has not changed by accident and can no longer prove that nobody changed it on purpose.

Frequently asked questions about Hash Generator

Is a hash the same as encryption?

No. A cryptographic hash is a one-way digest and cannot be decrypted back to the original text.

Can I use this to store passwords?

Not directly. Password storage needs a dedicated, salted and intentionally slow password-hashing function such as Argon2, scrypt, or bcrypt.

Why is SHA-1 marked as legacy?

SHA-1 has practical collision attacks and should not be used for modern security decisions. It remains available only for compatibility checks.
